UNSW Blues and Sports Awards Dinner

2008 Blue Recipients

Blues and Sports Awards Dinner

The 56th Annual Blues and Sports Awards and Dinner was held on Friday May 29, 2009 at The John Niland Scientia Building and was an outstanding success, with more than 250 guests in attendance to witness the presentation of the prestigous Blues and Sports Awards. This event celebrated the 2008 sporting achievements at UNSW.

The night started with the Ben Lexcen Sports Scholarship launch, with guest speaker Geoff Lawson setting the tone for an enjoyable evening talking about the Ben Lexcen Sports Scholarships, their importance, how they help our athletes and the importance of sport at university in general.

Guests then moved into the magnificent surrounds of Leighton Hall in the John Niland Scientia Building for the 56th annual Blues and Sports Awards.

MC for the night was former Wallaby Peter FitzSimons, and guest speaker former Australian Cricket captain and UNSW Sporting Hall of Fame member, Mark Taylor.

Awards presented during the night were:

Sports Recognition Awards.
To be nominated for these awards, the nominee must have actively supported the nominating club for a minimum period of three years, either by consistent participation in the club's sporting or recreational activity or by valuable service to the club's organisation and administration.

The 2008 SRA awardees were Vincent Ng (Badminton), Darren Sue (Cricket), Tim Larsen (Taekwondo) and Peppi Kearney (Water Polo).

UNSW Sports Awards:
The Club of the Year is an award with a long tradition at UNSW, but in 2008 additional recognition awards were instituted.
The following were the award winners (pictured below left to right): 

Administrator of the Year - Rowan Murray, Basketball

Coach of the Year - Andrew Yanitsas - Water Polo

Team of the Year - Women's AUG Touch

Female Athlete of the Year - Gabrielle King, Sailing

Male Athlete of the Year - joint winners were George Tang, Table Tennis and Corrie Eames, Water Polo

Club of the Year Trophy - Water Polo Club.

The Blues awards were presented by Professor Richard Henry, DVC Academic, who spoke about the history of the sporting Blue and the significance it represents to those who receive it, and acknowledged the importance of sport in university life.

The 2008 Blues were presented to:

George Tang (Table Tennis) and David Matthews (Triathlon) were both presented Blues for 2007.

The Toast to the Blues was made by a Rowing Blue from 1993, Emma Mills and she had each of the guests hanging on to her every word. To read her toast click here. Alexandra Smith replied on behalf of the current Blue recipients.

Overall everyone had a wonderful night and are already looking forward to next year!
