The Latest Sports News from UNSW

Archery
On Sunday 2 August 2009, the UNSW Archery Club held its Annual Mid-Year Tournament. In the Individual Event, participants shot a Double UNSW Round (2x30arrows) which has a maximum possible score of 600. In the Open Division, Harry Tang opened with a strong lead, rarely straying outside the 8-ring. He went on win the division with a score of 526/600. Yue Wu dominated Novice division, particularly in the second round where his endurance paid off. He took first place (529/600) by a clear margin of 30 points.

In the Teams Event, participants shot an Olympic Team Round (4x6arrows) which has a maximum score of 240. The winner of this event was Team C consisting of Allan Zhang, KW Ng and Sigitas Karpavicius (200/240). Whilst Team Three Blind Mice took an early lead in the Finals, they were unable to maintain it and Team C managed to scrape a win by a close 4 point margin.

The day witnessed some very impressive shooting. The Club High Score (previously 263/300) was bested by both Zhe Chen and Harry Tang. The record now stands at 267/300. Julia Ong of the Novice Division scored a Perfect End of 3 bull’s eyes. Team Three Blind Mice, despite being the clear underdogs, gave a performance worth of note by besting almost all the other teams on their way to the finals. Unfortunately, they were unable to beat Team C who put their win down to efforts of “the old blind man and the compounder”.

AFL
Round 16
UNSW-ES 18.9 (117) def Western Suburbs 10.8 (68) Village Green

Round 17
UNSW-ES v East Coast Eagles Bruce Purser Reserve

Round 18
UNSW-ES v Sydney University Sydney Uni No 1 Oval

With Pennant Hills winning, UNSW-ES needed a win in their game against Wests at the Village Green to remain in the double-chance position on the ladder. And after an even first quarter, the Bulldogs pulled ahead to pull off the win. The Bulldogs hit the front in the second term and led by 10 points at half time, and extended their advantage during the premiership quarter with a 6 goals to 1 burst. The final margin was 49 points, the result keeping UNSW-ES in third place; although the race for the double-chance in the finals is far from decided. Brad Abbott kicked 6 for the Bulldogs and Ryan Underwood 3, while Underwood and Kieran Emery were key players in the Bulldogs' performance.

Taekwondo
Report from the UNSW State Championships in which 7 of our club members participated. The tournament was held on Sunday 9th July in Homebush and was the largest state competition in NSW to date.

Results:
Fai Chan - Gold Medal
Hong Chan - Gold Medal
Eric Wong - Silver Medal
Kendrick Leung - Silver Medal
Roy Kwan - Silver Medal
Peter Hwang - Bronze Medal
Joanne Teo - Bronze Medal

There were some absolutely exciting matches on the day; in particular I would like to mention Fai Chan who dominated the competition, KO'ing the semi final and forcing his opponent in the gold medal match to throw in the towel - well done. The feedback from other clubs was 'who is UNSW Taekwondo, and how did your competitors get so good?' All in all Taekwondo Australia was very impressed with all the competitors coming out of our club, well done everyone.

Judo and the City2Surf
The UNSW judo club team had 4 entrants run in the City2Surf. Our UNSW Judo team result was 20th place out of 55 sporting clubs. Congratulations to Matt Dudek, who gets to claim the Judo Club Running Champion title, as well as the Mr Sneaky award for getting us to the front of the 20,000 strong blue starting group before the race started :)

Well done to everyone who turned up to the training sessions, whether you competed on the day or not. It was good to see so many people joining in along the way.

Coming up is the Sydney Bridge Run on September 20. This is a 9km run which anyone with a bit of judo fitness should be able to handle if they train in the weeks leading up to it. If you'd like to join our training sessions email judo@unsw.edu.au

The individual CIty2Surf results are below.

Sailing
UNSW High Performance Scholar, Ajay Rau secures best finish for India at World Championships Karatsu, Japan:

On August 10, 2009 when Ajay Rau completed race 12 at the Men’s Laser Radial World Championships he made history for India. He finished 15th overall (148.0 points), making it the best ever finish by an Indian sailor in the laser class at any world championship. In the country ranking India finished in the 11th position.

The Royal Madras Yacht Club sailor beat previous best result 22nd (222.0 points) by a big margin secured by Rajesh Choudhary in the 2006 World championships held at Los Angeles, USA.

The move to Sydney has paid off for Ajay, finishing 15th in the Worlds is no easy feat considering India traditionally isn’t among the powerhouses in the World of Sailing. This performance has opened a new avenue for Indian sport and has given realistic belief to Ajay that one day he could be World Champion in Laser sailing which was unheard off till recently.

“My Coach Allan Julie deserves a lot of the credit for my performance. We really make a good team and it has shown in the results. He is one of the most experienced sailors I know (4 time Olympian from Seychelles).I couldn’t have asked for a better result. I am already itching to get back on the water to start training for the next world championship.”

This performance has also lifted the young sailor’s chances to win selection for the Asian Games, sending a strong message to his competitors for the lone spot for the Asian Games. The laser Radial is an open Class at the Asian Games. This is also a big boost for Ajay's 2012 Olympic Campaign.

He is sponsored by Mittal Champions Trust, AMM Foundation, Sports Development Authority of Tamilnadu, UNSW Elite Athlete support program and Seagear.

Skiing

Thredbo to Vancouver for Scott Kneller
Scott Kneller’s (2009 Ben Lexcen Scholar) focus is on fulfilling his lifelong dream of representing Australia at a Winter Olympics.

Last Saturday Scott narrowly missed out in defending the Thredbo Top to Bottom classic, it is skiing’s version of the City Surf fun run, a mad dash down Mt Crackenback, with recreational skiers doing their best to upstage pro ski racers. Scott finished 2nd.

Regarding Scott’s ambition to go to the Olympics he needs to be in the top 35 on World Cup rankings to qualify for the Vancouver Olympics. Scott is ranked 30th, with six World Cup events remaining before the Games.

Scott will be heading up a very strong UNSW Snow Sports team to contest the 2009 AUS Snow Sports Championships to be held at Scott’s home mountain Thredbo at the end of the month.

Ultimate Frisbee
Over the weekend, the UNSW Ultimate Frisbee Club hosted its annual Savage Sevens Tournament. This tournament can attract players from the East Coast of Australia, and sometimes beyond. This year 16 teams are competed from Brisbane, Newcastle, Canberra and across Sydney at Parramatta Park. Savage Sevens gets its name from the structure of the tournament... 7 players on each team (3 girls, 4 guys) and no substitutes. Games are shortened, but the running, and intensity, does not stop all day.

Stay tuned for results!

2009 Australian University Games
29 sports...6,500 athletes. Make sure you get your spot in one of Australia's largest multi-sport events and join us on the Gold Coast in September 2009. Plenty of sporting action during the day and a fantastic social program at some of the Gold Coast's best nightclubs. Plus...the opening ceremony is at Sea World! Registrations close 21 August so don't miss out!

A major change will be implemented for AUG’s in 2009 with each university only allowed to enter one team per sport category (one men’s, one woman’s and one mixed) regardless of the division. As a result of this trials will be required to ensure that the best team possible is selected to represent UNSW on the Gold Coast in September. We would like to streamline the trials dates into a two week period from week 2 (27th July to 7th August).

AUG is during week 10 of Semester 2 and as a result we have been working with Student Services to provide support for students who are missing classes to represent UNSW at AUG. Therefore we need to collect as much information as possible as soon as possible to ensure this information reaches Student Services with enough time. Teams will need to be confirmed by Monday 17th August (registration closes 28th August).

All clubs intending to send a team to AUG should notify Libby Sadler via email l.sadler@unsw.edu.au of their AUG Team Manager as soon as possible so she can begin to work with them towards this event.
