UNSW teams achieved top 3 results in 17 events at last week's Australian University Games on the Gold Coast.
A total of 6925 university students participated in the 2009 Australian University Games, representing 44 different universities. With a team of just over 300 athletes and teams entered in 35 events, the success rate of UNSW was excellent.
Whilst the overall result of 7th place was a drop from our 5th place in 2008, a high overall points score requires a large team, and UNSW was competing against Universities with between 50 and 150 more athletes. In 2008 we had nearly 400 students competing, but the move of the mid-semester break resulted in a reduction of nearly 100 students in our team.
In 2008 our 5th place was achieved when winning only 8 medals compared to 17 this year. Obviously there is a reward in sending big teams.
We won Gold medals in three sports, and were agonisingly close to national championships in a further 6 sports.
20 UNSW students achieved Green and Gold selection which rewards the top athletes in each sport. Included in these selections were many of our Elite Athletes including Lauren Kitchen in Cycling, Ashleigh Dind in Touch and Ali Gronow in Water Polo.
Highlights included the third successive Gold Medal to George Tang in the Table Tennis singles and he is now undefeated in AUG competition. The semi-final win by the Rugby 7s team over rugby powerhouse Sydney Uni was also a highlight. Lauren Kitchen won 2 golds and a silver medal in women's cycling (pictured right).
