What are they and how can they help you?
An exercise Physiologist is a university qualified health professional who holds accreditation with the Australian Association of Exercise & Sports Science (AAESS). Exercise Physiologists are specialists in the provision of exercise management services for primary and secondary prevention of chronic disease.
An EP provides services within the area of exercise science and they can specialise in a number of areas including health, fitness and exercise rehabiliation. Registered EP's are now recognised under the Medicare Allied Health Scheme so you can be assured you can dealing with a professional.
UNSW Sport & Recreation currently has a number of EP's working in the areas of health, exercise and rehabilitation. Our staff have clinical experience in the management of conditions such as asthma, musculoskeletal injuries, arthritis, diabetes and heart disease. They are also able to help you in achieving your health and exercise needs regardless of whether or not you are currently exercising or you are an elite athlete, we can ‘help you achieve your desired goals. Our EP's also specialise in other areas such as sport specific training, weight loss and health & fitness testing.
Since January 1, 2006 registered exercise physiologists have been able to provide Medicare services to people who have been referred by a general practitioner. This means that eligible patients will be able to claim 5 consultations per year at a rate of $44.95. This is a great achievement and the inclusion of exercise physiologists into the Medicare’s allied health scheme has been supported by Australian Divisions of General Practice Ltd and Sports Medicine Australia.
